Essential Oil vs. Hydrosol: Understanding Two Distinct Lavender Products

Many people are familiar with lavender essential oil, but fewer have heard of lavender hydrosol. While both products come from the same lavender flowers and are created during the same distillation process, they are very different in composition, strength, and everyday use.

Lavender essential oil is the concentrated oil extracted from lavender flowers through steam distillation. During the process, steam passes through the plant material and captures the aromatic compounds found naturally within the flowers. Once cooled, the oil separates from the water and is collected as essential oil. Because it is highly concentrated, only a small amount is needed for use in diffusers, DIY products, or aromatherapy applications.

Lavender hydrosol, sometimes called lavender floral water, is the water that remains after distillation. This water contains trace amounts of essential oil along with water-soluble plant compounds that are naturally present in lavender. Hydrosol has a much softer scent than essential oil and can be used as a linen spray, room mist, fabric refresher, or gentle body spray.

Both products offer unique benefits and are valued for different reasons. Essential oil provides a concentrated lavender experience, while hydrosol offers a lighter and more versatile way to enjoy the aroma of fresh lavender throughout the day. Together, they showcase the remarkable versatility of a single plant.
